These days, a big part of the comfort homeowners take from their heating system is how little fuel it takes to keep them comfortable. As part of the world’s first condensing cast iron boiler, SmartCycle provides state-of-the-art digital control that is configured especially to Ray as part of a comprehensive product design and development process: no other residential boiler has more componentry designed just for that one appliance.

Because Ray relies on cast iron rather than steel or aluminum, it’s the ideal retrofit boiler to bring a new era of fuel efficiency to an older home (see the “On The Job” section for more). SmartCycle is part of that equation, using existing thermostats to access digitally-controlled fuel efficiency.

Ray’s unique fuel/air coupling means low emissions levels: Ray is rated Low NOx <30ppm by SCAQMD standards. Yet SmartCycle is versatile enough to manage output for a full array of heating demands, from domestic hot water (showers, etc.), conventional system temperatures, and radiant system temperature.

SmartCycle makes multiple unit installations more simple to set-up and more efficient to operate. Whether due to overall square footage of space or factors like snow melt systems or spa master baths, sometimes two is better than one. With SmartCycle built into each Ray unit and pre-configured to its input/output levels, connecting multiple units is literally as simple as plugging in a single Ethernet cable: truly plug and play.

With no external or third-party control required, and with just a single Ethernet cable connection, every Ray boiler is able to serve as the master in a multi-unit configuration. No space taken up by additional controls or wiring, plus no additional costs. And because each unit’s SmartCycle controller is configured to Ray’s input/output parameters, the installer establishes set points only once, regardless of the number of units. Sophisticated algorithms for multi-unit modulation (such as add delay/shed delay) are incorporated directly into the controller based on Ray’s specific engineering.

An advanced option typically associated with intricate commercial applications, SmartCycle includes the option of incorporating indoor air reset (rather than outdoor air) to provide the maximum fuel efficiency for how the system is actually used in each individual home. Activating SmartCycle’s indoor air reset option provides an installation of one or more units with the most advanced residential control system available, period.

With a small amount of additional wiring, SmartCycle’s indoor air reset can monitor up to eight different zones, checking readings every five seconds and comparing against the programmed set points. Because SmartCycle’s parameters are integral to Ray’s engineering, indoor air reset calculates to the most precise possible degree when the set point will be reached, and begins lowering input levels as the set point is approached. This predictive modulation of input levels provides lab-bench-test levels of fuel efficiency to real-world, real-home, real-life conditions in ways no other technology can equal.
